Optimization

Please familiarize yourself with our best practices for a successful AdSense implementation. In this section we’ll discuss tips regarding ad format, ad type, ad style, ad position and ad coverage.

Choose a wide ad format
Wider ad sizes tend to perform the best, due to better readability, higher number of ad slots in an ad unit and advertisers preferences. The ad sizes we've found to be the most effective are these:
  • The 336x280 large rectangle
  • The 300x250 medium rectangle
  • The 160x600 wide skyscraper
  • The 728x90 leaderboard
  • The 300x600 half page
Keep in mind that while these ad sizes typically perform well, you should use the size that best complements your page. To see all available ad formats and their specifics,  please take a look at our Guide to ad sizes.

Opt in to text and display ads

There are two types of ads that may appear on your page: text ads and display ads. We recommend that you activateboth ad types to ensure that all available advertisers can bid to appear on your site. This can effectively boost the prices paid for the space on your site.
Not all sizes can support display ads, so we suggest sticking to the recommended sizes noted in the previous tab to maximize your earnings.
Match your ad unit’s colors
Ads usually perform better when colors are customized to the text and link colors that already exist on your site. To integrate your ads with your site, make the background and borders of your ads the same color as the background of your page where the ad will be placed.
Let's briefly define the three techniques you can use to design ad styles that will be successful for your site:
  • Blend: Make the background and borders of your ads the same color as the background of your page where the ad is placed.

  • Complement: Use colors that already exist on your site, but don't match the background and borders exactly where the ads are placed.

  • Contrast: Choose colors that stand out against the background of your site. Contrasting is recommended only for sites with a dark background.

Identify the best places for your ad units

First of all, when placing ad code on your pages, make sure that your content and ad implementation are policy-compliant. It’s also important to keep in mind the user experience.
Next, you need to decide where to place ads on your pages. Although the optimal location for ads dependent a lot on the type of site you’re working with, we’d like to share some general best practices:
  • Place your ads above the fold (the part of the page users can see without scrolling down).
  • Place your ads close to the content that your users are interested in.
  • Place additional ad units (up to three per page) on content-rich pages.
Good example: site layouts that highlight content

Bad example: site layout that pushes content below the fold

Best practices for increasing traffic

Site optimization to increase traffic is usually segmented into two parts:
  1. New traffic acquisitions
  2. Website enhancements such as optimizing ad placement, navigation and content on your website.
