Ad targeting and competition
Ads will automatically be targeted to the content of your site in one of three ways:
- Contextual targeting: The AdSense crawler visits your page, learns what your content is about, and matches ads to the content of your page.
- Placement targeting: Advertisers can select to run their ads on specific ad placements, or subsections of your website. Placement-targeted ads are handpicked by advertisers who would like to reach visitors to your sites.
- Interest-based advertising: Advertisers are able to reach users based on their interests (such as 'sports enthusiasts'), and can show ads based on a user's previous interactions with them, such as visits to advertiser websites.
In the AdSense ad auction, eligible ads compete to appear on your website. The ads that win the auction for a particular ad unit will be displayed -- our system automatically selects the ads that will generate the most revenue for you while ensuring a good user experience.
Monitor your ad traffic to prevent invalid clicks
Advertisers trust that any click on an ad is a result of genuine user interest. As such, it’s important that you monitor the traffic on your ads to ensure that your account is not accruing invalid activity.
A few tips to avoid invalid clicks:
- Avoid partnering with untrusted / low-quality parties in an effort to increase traffic to your site.
- In order to understand your site's traffic better, you can segment your traffic into different channels and monitor their behavior.
- Don’t click on your own ads (if you’re looking for an ad's destination URL, please use the Google Publisher Toolbar).
- Don't encourage others to click on your ads, and don't use any deceptive or misleading ad placement strategies that may encourage accidental clicks.
Explore the Ad review center
The Ad review center is a tool that lets you review individual ads and choose whether to let them show on your pages. If you want more transparency and control over the ads appearing on your sites, it might be a good fit for you.
To enable the Ad review center, follow these steps:- Visit the Allow & block ads tab.
- In the horizontal bar across the top of the page, click the Ads (Ad review center) tab.
- Review the information about using the Ad review center. If you're ready to start using the feature, please click thesubmit a request link.
To learn more about how to set up and use the different review options, please follow these steps.

Learn about other ad controls
In addition to the Ad review center, there are a few other ways in which you can block ads:
- Advertiser URLs: This option allows you to block ads from a particular URL, for example, to avoid showing your competitor's ads.
- Ad category: You can block ads from categories related to sensitive topics such as Religion, Politics and References to Sex and Sexuality and general topics such as Business news & Media, Cooking and Finance.Sensitive category blocking and general category blocking are available for ads in a limited set of languages, regardless of the language of the site.
- Ad network: Ads from certified Google ad networks are allowed to appear on your pages by default. We recommend that you stay with the default option because when you block ads or advertisers from an ad network, competition for your ad inventory is reduced, and you may miss out on additional revenue.
